The size of the shadow depends on the angle from which the light falls on the object ( 0 - 90 -180 degrees) . If the light falls from 0 or 180 degrees the shadow will be lengthier. if at 90 degrees shadow would be shorter, right below the object.
The shape of the shadow depends on the intensity of light, direction of the light source, the surfaces shape and texture on which it is falling and of course the shape of the object itself.
the shadow clarity and detailing to be represented in the sketch depends on the objective of the sketch. for example, in 3d composition, where the focus is on the objects, it is worth while to represent shadows with much clarity. in theme sketches, the purpose of the shadows is to create a 3 dimensional effect. so in this case they need not be shown very clearly, an illusion of shadows are sufficient.
for the purpose of NATA, we draw human beings in theme sketches to give a feel of the environment, so we would be trying the capture the mood of a larger environment, for which shadow representation need not be crystal clear.
i will uploaded few smaple shadow images for reference under assignments RI 01 on the assignments blog. Check them out.
your next assignment is to update your sketches based on the feedback given. this job will help you restructing your approach to sketching and helps you sketch better...if you do not want to redo , then take up next mock test and submit it by end of the day...
